Night Huntress II, One Foot in the Grave

One Foot in the Grave
Jeanine Frost
Avon
April
ISBN 0061245097
Paranormal
****1/2

To save the man she loves from the government, Cat Crawford left Bones years ago. In the meantime, she has adapted to her new life, exacting justice on rogue vampires as an agent of the United States. Thanks to Bones, who is himself a vampire, she is among the most adept at what she does, which makes her a target for assassination. Once again, she needs him in her life, although everyone else says it's a doomed relationship and he should be avoided. Bones is possibly the only person better at what Cat does than she is, and he does bring out her best. Though Cat planned on keeping things professional, Bones had other ideas.

If you want to read a book that follows a formula and is virtually indistinguishable from the last urban fantasy romance you read, or reads like a standard romance, except for the fact that the hero or heroine has fangs, fur, or both, then look elsewhere. The Night Huntress series is fresh, though it does have some of the hallmarks of the genre. Cat and Bones are a fantastic pair, perfectly simpatico, even when they are at odds. What's more, he's one of the most compelling heroes since J.D. Robb's Roarke. Don't just take my word for it though, read the books.

Experieincing the Resurrection

Experiencing the Resurrection
Henry and Mel Blackaby
Feb
ISBN 1590527577
Christian Living
****

Though Easter is the turning point of history, those whose life stems from the event it marks, the resurrection of Christ and the beginning of a new world, often fall short of enjoying the new life His gift has granted them. Respected teacher, Henry Blackaby, and his son, Mel, address this problem and explain how readers can change that in their own lives, with God's power. Among the topics addressed, you will find a concise apologetic for the Christian faith, explanations of what it means to experience the gifts of the resurrection, and what might be handicapping your life in Christ. After you complete this book, you will know that hope, joy, peace, and many other spiritual benefits await you in Christ, and with His grace, you will come to live out those blessings. Unlike many Christian living books, this is not a "self help"' guide, but something that points you towards getting real help, aid only God can give you. In effect, it links up the two verses, "Without Me (Christ Jesus) you can do nothing," and "I (Jesus) have come that you might have life, and have in more abundantly." You will have your best life now, by trusting in Him.

SEASON OF STRANGERS

A Season of Strangers
Kat Martin
HQN
May
ISBN 0778325547
Paranormal
****

A day at the beach turns into a pivotal moment for two sister, Julie and Laura, especially Julie. For a moment, time freezes and they are taken from the world, but when the moment is over, they do not quite know what happened. In a seemingly separate event, Julie's boss, Patrick Donovan, the man she has loved from afar has a heart attack that should have killed him, despite his youth. Yet, somehow, he not only survives, but seems reborn. No longer is he a drunken, addicted playboy, but now lives cleanly and is exactly the right sort of man to love Julie and for her to safely give her heart to. Changed or not, Patrick has to face the consequences of his past, consequences that might prove deadly for both he and the woman he loves. However, since he is not truly Patrick, but an alien who has borrowed his body for a short time, he has little to risk, except to his heart.

Ms. Martin has written perhaps her most fascinating and complex novel to date. Adventure is mingled with heart touching and rending moments. I loved the movie Starman and even the novelization of it, and this not only compares to but surpasses it. Definitely put it on your TBR list, even if you don't normally read alien books.

Rachel Morgan VI Outlaw Demon Wails

Outlaw Demon Wails
Kim Harrison
Eos
Feb
ISBN 0060788704
Urban fantasy
******

Though she is still going through the grief process over Kisten's death, Rachel Marianna Morgan has bigger concerns than her own pain. The demon, Al, is out for her blood, or worse, someone is using that anger to try and kill her, there is a family secret that has to power to shatter her hopes and trust, and Trent Kalamack is back in her life, wanting dangerous favors. Unfortunately, working with Trent is the only way to solve her problems, or so Rachel believes. It might just make them worse. If you dare, join her on the most incredible adventure yet in this simply marvelous series.

Turning the last page was both something I was eager to do, but terribly hated doing. This book, this entire series, rocks. Rachel has evolved into one of the most compelling heroines in the urban fantasy realm, adding in her spark filled interactions with Trent only makes things sing. Speaking of singing, Tanaka's welcome return is one of the most intriguing aspects of the story. Of course, Jenks is there for humorous relief that keeps things from getting too dark. Ms. Harrison is a genius, plain and simple.

What Lies in Shadow

What Lies in Shadow
Tina Wainscott
St Martin's
Feb
ISBN 0312941641
Romantic Suspense
*****

For weeks, Jonna has been living a dual life, in reality being a "desperate housewife" in a fizzling marriage, and in the virtual world, venting her frustrations and fantasies in a blog as the mysterious, adventress, Montene. When she finally decided to cheat, she chooses a man who has commented on her blog and the nightmares begin. Before Jonna can follow through with her worst inclinations, she finds herself falling in love with her husband who has turned into a kinder, more open man and on the other side of the coin, becoming terrified of her would be lover, Dom. Determined to have her, he sets out on a course that threatens to wreck the marriage she now cherishes and possibly worse. As the situation grows darker and more twisted, Jonna discovers that she does not know who to trust and with no one to turn to.

If you love a challenging, complex thriller, then this is exactly what you need to buy. Ms. Wainscott builds the tension perfectly. As various characters reveal their true faces, even things you might half suspect become shocking. Ever since she began writing fun, sweet paranormals, I've considered every word of hers a keeper. This book only cements that opinion.

Night Creatures

Thunder Moon
Lori Handeland
St. Martin's
Jan
ISBN 0312949189
Urban Fantasy
****1/2

Grace McDaniel may have been forced to accept that werewolves exist, but she's still the epitomy of pragmatism. She had believed that the monsters were all gone, taken care of by the Jager Sachers, but now, something is killing people, leaving them heartless. Is it the new doctor in town? There is something odd about Ian Walker, to be sure, but she does not want to believe him, the man she is falling in love with, evil. Trying to prove him innocent, to stop the murders, stay alive, and keep Edward's blasted band of merry men and women out of her town, Grace will have to believe in more than she wants to and make sacrifices that would break any heart, even one as braced against sentiment as hers.

Ms. Handleland has created a stunning story that has just enough action, romance, and magic to make it one for lovers of all sorts of urban fantasy and adventure. The only bad thing about it is there are implications that the tales of the Night Creatures might be at an end, and I would severely miss Edward and company.

A HERO FOR JESSICA

A Hero For Jessica
Pamela Tibodeaux
www.thewildrosepress.com
2008
Inspirational
*****

From their first encounter, Paul Seville and Jessica Aucoin are fascinated by each other. When she turns to the handsome attorney forChristian, help in dealing with an issue from her past and a change she wants to take in her writing future, Paul becomes the hero she needs. Is Jessica who he needs?

I dare you not to smile before this story is over. The only possible flaw is its brevity. I could have easily read Paul and Jessica's story for another couple of hundred pages. Romans 8:28 is played out with a sweet reality that will encourage you and give you hope. I can believe that this might really happen, thanks to the characters being so true to life. Ms. Thibodeaux has a gift; if you read her works you will give yourself one.
